5 tips to survive and thrive at University  – the Cape Town student living edition

Nov 22, 2022

Navigating life on campus can be a bit much at first. New life, new you, new number who dis? Here are some handy tips to get off to a flying start.

  1. Attend your lectures regularly – yawn!
Yes, it can be a lot, but that’s ultimately why you’re here. You can’t always rely on crib notes from friends or cramming at the last minute. You will get a lot of valuable information from your Professors and Lecturers not necessarily found in your textbook – and you get to ask questions, get it from the horse’s mouth so to speak. Lucky for you, The Rezident is a mere 9 minutes from campus, even faster if you jog. That means you can sleep in and still make that 9 am lecture.
  1. All work and no play…
Get the work out of the way and stick to a schedule so that you can make time for that other very important aspect of being a student: jolling. Not all Cape Town Student Accommodation spots are created equal, some are located miles from the action, or heaven forbid even in another suburb. You don’t want to blow all your cash and time on getting around, you want to be close to the fun.
  1. Research, research, research
And we’re not just talking about the type you’ll have to do to catch a degree. Make sure you are in the know about the latest happenings in the area. Top tip, you can get incredible specials on food every night of the week. Make sure you know where and what your Student Card gets you, you’ll be surprised at where it takes you. Join the right groups on Social Media to get the latest alerts for specials and discounts. The same goes for cooking at home, the rooms at The Rezident come standard with private kitchens, so if you want to impress your new crew with your culinary delights, make sure you stay up to date with the latest promotions and specials from all the supermarkets in the area.
  1. Be safe
Let’s be honest, things will get wild at times and although there are various safety measures on campus to keep you safe, it is still important to follow the basic personal security rules. Get pepper spray on your keychain, always travel in groups of two or more and make sure someone always knows where you are going. As far as student accommodation near UCT goes, The Rezident is as safe as they come. It’s located within the UCT Safety Zone, it is protected by a private security team and sports security cameras and electric fences.
  1. Last but not least, make friends
Believe it or not but some friends you make at university will be your friends for life! Whether you need a partner in crime, or a shoulder to cry on, you’ll find your tribe at uni. A good place to start is at the myriad of clubs and organisations on and around campus. Now is the time to pursue your extramural  talents, or try something crazy new that you always wanted to do. It’s a great way to meet people from different cultures and backgrounds to broaden your horizons.
